Sandy Newell was born in Chicago and currently resides in Frankfort, Illinois. She works primarily in watercolor, using a pouring technique to create unexpected textures and reactions.

Sandy received her BFA from the University of Illinois and her MBA from Loyola University of Chicago. She began her career as a graphic designer and successfully operated her own design studio for fifteen years. She also taught art at the local grade school for several years, learning as much from her students as they did from her.

In 2014, Sandy became a signature member of the Illinois Watercolor Society (IWS). "The Gardener” won an Osio-Brown award at the IWS 2016 Annual Members Show. Her painting "Romeo" received an honorable mention from the 2014 IWS National Exhibition, Sandy had a solo show "Animal Kingdom" at the Orland Park Library in April of 2016 and at Moraine Valley Community College in September of 2017. She had a solo show "Pouring Paint" at Monkey Mind Gallery in Frankfort, IL. in 2012.
